Jeane Manson: An American Woman in Paris, 50 years of artistic passion
Jeane Manson was born on October 1, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States, and spent the first twelve years of her life in Mexico City. Her father, John Manson, an American of Scottish and English ancestry, was a writer and a film and television producer in the United States and Latin America.
Her mother, Chris Stevens, born in the United States and of Polish ancestry, had grandparents who immigrated from Poland to New York in the early 1900s. At the age of 23, she joined the USO tours organized for American troops during the Second World War and performed with the quartet of Louis Prima, the great jazz composer and musician. She sang in Germany and France, among other places, and in France she met Jeane’s father, who was returning from the war between China and Japan. He was a B-52 bomber pilot and completed his service in Le Havre, France, in 1945.
He met Chris Stevens while playing ping-pong and listening to her sing. After the war, he rejoined his family in Chicago, while Chris returned to New York, where she continued singing with Louis Prima and his orchestra. She later joined him in Chicago, where they married.
Thanks to her beauty and talent, Chris Stevens placed second in the Miss Illinois competition during the 1947 Miss America contest. In Mexico, she sang on television with a jazz orchestra and recorded several records for RCA Records. She continued singing until the age of 92. Jeane released a digital album entitled Back When, available on streaming platforms.
Chris devoted herself throughout her life to painting in an Impressionist style. Jeane owns several of her works. Some of these paintings have been sold in California, New York and Paris, including at the French National Assembly. Others will soon be offered for sale in the shop.
Jeane Manson has always been inspired by her parents’ talent.
Jeane leaves Mexico with her mother and her sister Barbara to settle in Hollywood, California. From her teenage years, she develops a passion for the arts: music, dance and acting. She begins learning music at the age of eight, choosing the guitar and piano as her instruments. At thirteen, she takes film classes at MGM Studios in California. At university, she earns a degree in music, continues her musical studies in singing and composition, and then joins Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio in Hollywood.
At the beginning of her career in Hollywood, she appeared in “The Young Nurses”, directed by Clint Kimbrough, with Ashley Porter, then in “Dirty O’Neil”, directed by Leon Capetanos and Lewis Teague, with Morgan Paull, and in “Terror Circus”, directed by Alan Rudolph, with Andrew Prine, before becoming Playmate of the Month in August 1974 in Playboy magazine, where she dared to pose.
That same month of August 1974, Jeane flew to Europe carrying only a guitar and a suitcase filled with sheet music and plays. She was leaving her California behind to seek new adventures as an artist. She decided to settle in Paris.
Jeane adapted very quickly to French culture and appeared in her first French film, “L’Acrobate”, directed by Jean-Daniel Pollet, with Claude Melki and Guy Marchand, then in “Bons Baisers de Hong Kong”, directed by Yvan Chiffre, with Les Charlots and Mickey Rooney. She also appeared in “Le Justicier de minuit”, directed by J. Lee Thompson, with Charles Bronson, “La Trace”, directed by Bernard Favre, with Richard Berry, “Corps plongés”, directed by Raoul Peck, with Geno Lechner and Jean-Michel Martial, and “The Piano Player”, directed by Jean-Pierre Roux, with Dennis Hopper and Christophe Lambert.
Alongside her film work, she continued making music and singing. She embarked on her first tour in 1974 with Sacha Distel. But it was in 1976 that her career took a turning point when she met composers Jean Renard and Michel Mallory, with whom she recorded her first major hit, “Avant de nous dire adieu”. Jeane was launched at MIDEM in 1976 by Jean Renard’s production company, with the participation of the Marouani family, on the CBS label, which became Sony Music. The song sold more than two million copies in one year. Thanks to this success, she went on to sing around the world: in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, China, the United States, Canada and Japan.
From that moment on, singing became her main artistic activity. Jeane has recorded more than 680 songs, most of which are available digitally and distributed on streaming platforms.
She has received six gold singles, two gold albums and a platinum record, selling more than 30 million records over a 50-year career.
In 1979, she represented Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest in Jerusalem with the song “J’ai déjà vu ça dans tes yeux”, written by Jean Renard.
On television, she has appeared alongside many international artists: Julio Iglesias, Kenny Loggins, Michael Jackson, Earth Wind and Fire, Sting, Joan Baez, Joe Dassin, as well as many French and European artists. It was the golden age of French variety entertainment, with shows by Maritie and Gilbert Carpentier, Jacques Martin, Guy Lux and Danièle Gilbert: a great era of musical creativity on television.
Her tours around the world have kept her on the road throughout the years, with more than 5,000 concerts.
Combining all styles, from pop to classical, in several languages (French, English and Spanish), Jeane recorded, among her many CDs, a country album in Nashville in 1994, in collaboration with Michel Mallory, entitled Country Girl, with Disney France. In 1991, she also recorded an album of popular Mexican songs with El Mariachi Mezcal de Paris, in memory of her youth in Mexico. In 1998, she had the privilege of recording two classical CDs in Moscow with the Alexandrov Red Army Choirs, who also accompanied her on tour in more than 200 churches in France and Switzerland. An album entitled Jeane Manson Noël avec le Chœur de l’Armée Rouge — Live will be released in November 2026.
In 1989, Jeane recorded “Yobel”, a song specially written by Jeane Paul Steiger for World Youth Day, which she had the honor of singing before Pope John Paul II when he celebrated Mass before more than 200,000 people on the Champ-de- Mars in Paris.
She was awarded the French National Order of Merit for her song “Hymne à la Vie”, composed by Francis Lai, which addresses environmental issues. She was also appointed a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters for her entire career.
Sensitive and attentive to the problems and changes in our society, Jeane has been deeply involved in charitable organizations for years. A fervent supporter of animal welfare and the animal cause, she would fight on many occasions to advance a “vegetarian attitude”.
The theater has also played a major role in Jeane’s life. In the 1980s, she appeared in Édouard Bourdet’s comedy “Le Sexe faible”, directed by Jean- Laurent Cochet, alongside Patachou and Michel Creton, at the Théâtre Hébertot in Paris, as well as in Jean Poiret’s “La Présidente”, with Roland Giraud, at the Théâtre des Variétés. She also played Dulcinea in the musical “L’Homme de la Mancha”, with Jean Piat and Richard Taxi, at the Théâtre Marigny in Paris. In the 1990s, she performed in “Dédé”, an operetta first performed by Maurice Chevalier, at the Théâtre des Célestins in Lyon, and in Oscar Straus’s “Les Trois Valses” at the Marseille Opera. In 2004, she appeared at the Théâtre de la Michodière in Paris and on tour in “Un Homme parfait”, with Guy Montagné. From 2021 to 2023, Jeane Manson shares the stage with Popeck in “Des Larmes de Crocodiles”, a comedy by Claude Cohen and Thierry Crouzet, directed by Olivier Lejeune. Tailor-made for Popeck and Jeane, who enjoy themselves to the fullest in this modern comedy.
She has also produced shows and concerts at the Salle Gaveau in 1991, the Casino de Paris in 1994 and the Cirque d’Hiver in 2007, with her horses and 100 artists and musicians.

She has also been seen on television in several series and television films, such as “Le Clan”, with Victor Lanoux and Marie-José Nat, “Talkie Walkie”, “Riviera”, the first French soap opera of 250 episodes, and a few episodes of “Sous le Soleil”.
In 2000, Jeane recorded a gospel album with Broadway’s Gospel Group, who accompanied her on the roads of France for concerts in churches and cathedrals.
Today, she continues her gospel journey. It is also a spiritual choice, as she has written a book, “Prières d’Amour”, published by Éditions du Rocher, to express her faith in God and Humanity. To date, Jeane has sung in more than 600 churches.
In 2006, Jeane celebrates 30 years of her career. To commemorate this event, she produced, with partners and the Bouglione family, a major show held over several days at the Cirque d’Hiver in Paris, with 65 musicians, dancers, backing singers, acrobats, riders and horses. An experienced rider herself, she owns purebred Lusitano horses with whom she has performed at the prestigious Cadre Noir in Saumur, as well as at many equestrian festivals and on racecourses throughout France. A souvenir DVD of the Cirque d’Hiver show was made and is on sale in the shop.
In 2007, Jeane records the album “Amour caché”, in a new, more R&B style.
She continues touring churches throughout France with various gospel groups during the following three years. Before joining “Gospel for All”, Jeane performs for fourteen years, from church to church, singing of peace, faith and hope.
